What we found

Carried across five sleeper nights and nine transfers. Nothing has broken; one wheel is noisier than the other.

Hard shell is the right call on night trains because it can be sat on and it locks. It is the wrong call if you overpack by nature.

Good

  • Fits the upper-bunk rack on the sleeper stock we travelled
  • Wheels and handle are user-replaceable, which is rare at this price
  • Matte shell hides the scuffing that ruins gloss cases

Less good

  • 38 L exceeds some budget-airline cabin allowances — check first
  • No external pocket, so the passport lives in a jacket
