What we found

Four years in, on the original blade, sharpened perhaps ten times. This is the tool the five-tools piece is arguing for.

If cuts leave a crushed tail, tighten the pivot a quarter turn before you reach for the sharpener.

Good

  • Fully serviceable: blade, spring, pivot bolt all sold separately
  • Sharpens cleanly on a diamond card in about four minutes
  • Light enough for an hour of pruning without hand fatigue

Less good

  • Handle span suits medium hands; small hands will want the compact version
  • Sap gums the pivot if you skip the annual strip-down
